What defines a good life may vary from person to person. For me, it’s about granting myself the freedom to pursue my dreams while fulfilling my responsibilities. This balance is much like a river running free with banks to guide its flow, ultimately merging with the sea. Too much flow causes flooding, and too many banks ……. create a stagnant lake!
Freedom: The Protector of Individuality
Freedom is essential, whether at a personal or national level, ensuring each individual has the right to express who they are. We can truly start living only when we are free. In its purest form, freedom encompasses not only the absence of oppression but also the freedom we grant ourselves to pursue our dreams and aspirations.
Discipline: The Structure
While freedom is vital, without discipline to structure our efforts towards reaching our goals, our commitment will waver. Discipline gives us the strength to endure hardship and setbacks with resilience and resolve. It ensures that in our pursuit of dreams, we do not neglect our other responsibilities, be it to work, family, or ourselves.
Purpose: North Star To Good Life
Our purpose in life may change as we grow older. Whether in the pursuit of personal growth, social justice, or spiritual enlightenment, purpose imbues life with depth and resonance. It aligns our passions, talents, and values, culminating in a profound sense of fulfilment and authenticity. Purpose… is what puts our freedom into context and helps us set our disciplines thereby maintaining a crucial balance between the two.
Conclusion
Without freedom, life stagnates in the shackles of oppression and conformity. Without discipline, potential remains unrealized, buried beneath procrastination and complacency. A sense of purpose ensures we neither take our freedom for granted nor become too rigid and restrictive. Together, freedom, discipline, and purpose create a harmonious, fulfilling and ‘good life’.
