There are many professions that I would like to try out for a day. Prime Minister, Police officer, Armed forces, celebrity….. but in one day neither will I be able to create an impact on the job nor will it have an impact on me… maybe if I had a week.. If I could do something for just one day.. it would be to become a teacher.. even one day of inspiring kids can have an impact on them for the rest of their lives and mine.

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire

– William Butler Yeats

We had this substitute English teacher for just a day back when I was in 11th standard. That one day, just one day we all loved our English class and made us see poetry in a different light. She came in like a breath of fresh air, though she was older than usual teacher. She asked us to readout poetry and then something very shocking for us back then.. Our Opinion on it! Usually we were just asked to mug up the poem and its meaning so we could reproduce it in the tests. This was a whole new experience for us. The discussion that followed… probably was the first time me and my friends discussed school work like we were talking about a movie or the latest gossip.

That’s where m love for poetry started. So yes I would love to be a teacher again even if its just for one day! What profession would you choose?

  1. I love this. Thanks for sharing. Teacher has been one of my dream jobs too, and my parents were both teachers. Also, I had a couple of very good high-school English Lit teachers, who like the substitute you had in 11th, encouraged free thought and expression and were very encouraging. I love that your post makes the point that you don’t have to be a full-time teacher to make a difference. I also love the quote you chose because it’s spot on. The best teachers encourage the desire to participate and practice, rather than criticize or demand conformity to meaningless standards.

  2. As a retired teacher, I love your answer. If you have time – sign up to be a substitute teacher and I hope that you can give the same impact that substitute had on you. Beautiful post.

  3. I left a comment here yesterday – it’s missing. Thanks for checking out my blog, which enabled me to find yours.

  4. Thanks for sharing. I read many of your blog posts, cool, your blog is very good.
