Among all the qualities I possess, my creativity is the one I cherish the most. It has shaped my identity, guided my journey, and fueled my passions. For me, being creative is more than arts and crafts; it’s about coming up with ideas when staring at a wall, believing every problem has a solution and pursuing that solution relentlessly.
How Being Creative has helped me
– Learn new Skills:
Having a head full of creative ideas would be of no use if I didn’t find ways to express them. This drive has led me to learn various skills like acting, cricket, painting, photography, pottery, crochet, playing the guitar and writing. Creativity has transformed these activities into deeply fulfilling experiences, allowing me to explore and express different facets of myself.
– The Joy of Creation:
There is an unparalleled joy in the process of bringing an idea to life and translating thoughts into tangible forms. When I paint, the blank canvas becomes a playground for my imagination. When I write, the empty page transforms into a tapestry of words and emotions. This joy of creation is a constant source of happiness and fulfillment, reminding me that through creativity, I have the power to shape my reality and share my vision with the world.
– Self Discovery:
Growing up, I wasn’t very good in my studies; my creativity was all I had. It drove my interest to learn and express myself. Many times, through creative expressions, I have discovered what I am feeling on a given day. The emotions I struggle with while playing a character in a play or the colors I use in a painting have helped me understand subtler emotions I might not address consciously.
– Problem-Solving and Innovation:
When faced with challenging situations, my creative mind seeks out-of-the-box solutions, turning obstacles into opportunities for growth. The biggest challenge my creativity faces is my anxiety and self-doubt. Once I overcome these, creativity starts flowing, always finding some solution.
– Art of Letting Go:
When you are treading a path laid out by creativity you are bound to make mistakes as there are no rule books to follow. I have been guilty of overworking pieces in the past, only to give up when they crossed from being ‘nice with a small mistake’ to ‘absolutely disastrous.’ Over the years, I’ve learned to stop at this point, take a break, and resume later. This approach helps me see things from a new perspective. Sometimes, mistakes take on their own meaning. For instance, I once accidentally left a fingerprint in the middle of a sunset scene painting, between two beams of light, but after a break, it looked like a beautiful lens flare in between two beams of light… it enhanced the painting!
– Dont Compare:
As a child, I loved to paint as a respite from my mother’s constant comparisons regarding exam marks. As I grew up, I realized people compare even in creativity. It’s worse because what the world sees as beautiful, I might not get it, and vice versa. Unlike exam marks, there are no guidelines for what qualifies as beautiful. Trends change, and there will always be people more creative than me, who are amazing and inspiring… and there will be those less creative than me, but more successful at making money using their creativity. The point is not to compare but to focus on what I want to achieve through my creative expression.
Challenges and creativity
Creativity allows you to see the world through a unique lens, finding beauty in the mundane and creating meaning from ordinary moments. This is something I still struggle with—seeing beauty in the mundane. Most days, I get busy with work and daily chores, keeping my creativity turned off unless there’s a dire need. But now, I am trying to find ways to express myself creatively daily. It doesn’t have to be a big art project; it could be something simple like figuring out a way to finish work more efficiently, keeping my cats engaged, or finding solutions to protect my laptop from dust.
Conclusion
They say creativity is the mother of all inventions, but for me, it’s the essence of my very being. Without creative expression, I feel suffocated. Creativity has taught me to embrace my individuality, trust my instincts, and be unapologetically myself. It has been instrumental in my journey toward self-awareness and authenticity, allowing me to live a life true to who I am.
