In today’s fast-paced world, achieving work-life balance is tough, especially in a creative field where it’s definitely not a 9 to 5 job. Sometimes an idea strikes just as you’re about to fall asleep, making it even tougher to switch off and stop constantly thinking about work.

How an Imbalanced Work-Life Balance Affects Me:

1. Mental Health:

It’s difficult to stop myself from constantly thinking. By the end of the day I often feel anxious and depressed, and that’s on a normal day. God forbid its a bad day, then there is the added bonus of feeling like a failure. If I have a great day at work. I stay in that happy state telling myself I am rewarding myself by ordering unhealthy food. In reality what I am really doing is causing more harm to my health.

2. Physical Health:

I use too much work as an excuse to skip meals, eat unhealthily, or avoid workouts. I DONT HAVE TIME! Add to it hours of working on the laptop that make my eyes hurt, get head aches, neck pains, stiffness in body, etc.

3. Relationships:

Relationships? What relationships? By the end of the day I am cranky, irritable and more often than not a pain to be around. I take it out on mu husband, hug my cats but forget to feed them and get bugged with them when they keep mewing to be fed. Avoid meeting people outside of work, cause what will I discuss?

4. Productivity:

The irony of it all…. being obsessed with work creates so much of imbalance, mentally and physically, that I eventually feel drained and then reach a point where I try to postpone doing something until there is a deadline. My productivity drops drastically.. 70 percent if I were to put a number to it. I go from being the most reliable, driven person to someone who needs to be kicked in the butt to do something… anything!

What I do to Achieve Work-Life Balance daily

1. Value My Time!

I remind myself that my time is very valuable. Using tools like calendars, to-do lists, and time-tracking apps to organise my day, helps me allocate specific times for work, exercise, family, and hobbies. This establishes clear boundaries between work and personal time, helping achieve the elusive work-life balance.

2. work on My tasks!

I try to Identify and focus on high-priority tasks and to delegate or say no to non-essential tasks. Avoiding unnecessary involvement in issues and trusting my team to handle tasks saves up time and energy for when I am really needed. I don’t have to be a hero in every situation, rescuing things at the end of the day!

3. Stretch it out!

Even if I don’t have the energy to do a full length workout session, I make it a point to take breaks to stretch out my whole body and relax my eyes. I walk during calls to add movement to my day. Doing 10 minutes of yoga stretches, massaging my body, meditating or dancing to fast-paced songs, helps release all the accumulated tension.

4. Talking Point!

I push myself to talk to friends and family daily, even when tired or irritated. Despite the struggle to start conversations, I feel enriched, motivated and learn something new by the end. Chilling out with colleagues and understanding their pain points helps us work better as a team, thereby improving work-life balance for everyone.

Achieving work-life balance is an ongoing process that requires conscious effort and adjustments. It’s about finding a rhythm that works for you and allows you to thrive both professionally and personally. By setting boundaries, prioritising self-care, and seeking support, you can create a more balanced and fulfilling life. The goal is not perfection but finding a sustainable and enjoyable way to navigate the demands of work and personal life, where I feel at peace with myself.

What do you do to achieve this balance in your life? I would love to hear what helps you!
